Description
A vintage movie poster of ''Gone With the Wind'', a 1939 American epic historical romance film directed by Victor Fleming and produced by David O. Selznick. The film is based on Margaret Mitchell's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name and is considered one of the most iconic and beloved films in cinematic history.
The story is set against the backdrop of the American Civil War and its aftermath. It follows the life and struggles of Scarlett O'Hara, played by Vivien Leigh, a strong-willed Southern belle. Scarlett's love interests include Rhett Butler, portrayed by Clark Gable, and Ashley Wilkes, played by Leslie Howard. The film explores Scarlett's journey from a pampered young woman through the hardships of the Civil War and the Reconstruction era, as she strives to protect her family and her plantation, Tara.
"Gone with the Wind" is renowned for its lavish production, sweeping cinematography, and memorable characters. The film received critical acclaim upon its release and became a commercial success. It won ten Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress for Vivien Leigh's portrayal of Scarlett O'Hara.
The film's four-hour runtime allows for an in-depth exploration of its characters and the complex relationships between them. It also addresses themes of love, survival, and the changing social and economic landscape of the American South during a turbulent period in history.
While "Gone with the Wind" is celebrated for its artistic achievements, it has also faced criticism for its portrayal of slavery and race, as well as its romanticization of the antebellum South. These aspects have led to ongoing debates and discussions about the film's historical context and its place in modern cinema.
Despite these controversies, "Gone with the Wind" remains a significant part of cinematic history and is often regarded as a classic of American cinema, known for its epic storytelling and iconic moments, including the famous line, "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn.".
About the artist:
Rolf Goetze was a German illustrator and painter who painted film poster art for about 30 years. His early works began in the 1930s, when he did a number of posters for Greta Garbo films, including "Queen Christina" (1934), "Anna Karenina" (1935), and "Camille" (1936). He continued creating German poster artwork of mostly American films through the 1960s.
From a stylistic point of view, Goetze's posters are characterized by a great compositional structure; the German designer was capable of blending incredibly realistic, close-up portraits, with elaborate scenes in the background. An undisputed master of portraiture, Goetze created numerous posters using monochrome, black and white, or sepia palettes. His posters look like realistic, vivid charcoal drawings. They are able to represent faces and expressions of their protagonists, as mirrors faithful to reality.
